The problem

What distributors actually need.

01

Real-time inventory across DCs and 3PLs

No reconciliation lag. No "phantom inventory." Order promising that holds up against actual ATP.

02

EDI compliance without chargeback drama

SPS or custom — your call. ASN compliance, label requirements, and 856/810 reconciliation that meet Tier-1 retailer SLAs.

03

Multi-channel without duplicate masters

B2B portal, eCommerce, EDI, and direct sales running off one item master, one customer master, one pricing structure.

04

WMS that operators actually use

Wave, zone, batch picking. RF or voice. Optimized for your DC layout, not a generic flow.

Engagement example
Placeholder — pending client approval

$90M wholesale distributor, 2 DCs, EDI to 4 retailers.

Migrated from QuickBooks Enterprise + Fishbowl to NetSuite WMS with RF-Smart, SPS Commerce for EDI, and SuiteCommerce B2B. Eliminated 11 hours/week of inventory reconciliation. Cut chargebacks from 2.4% to 0.3% within 90 days.

Failure modes

Three places this goes wrong.

Item master not cleaned before cutover.

Migrating 40,000 SKUs of which 11,000 have not shipped in 24 months poisons reporting day one. Rationalize before migrating, not after.

EDI scoped without retailer-by-retailer specifics.

Walmart, Target, and Costco each have different ASN timing, label, and chargeback rules. "We'll do EDI" without a retailer matrix burns the first 90 days post go-live in chargebacks.

WMS picked from a slide deck.

Native NetSuite WMS works for most mid-market 1–3 DC operations. RF-Smart wins on barcode-driven complexity. Picking from a sales deck instead of a DC walkthrough buys the wrong tool.

What this looks like in practice

A typical 3-week discovery sprint.

  1. Week 01 DC walkthrough

    Pick paths, slotting, freight.

Walk every wave/zone. Time pickers. Map carton flow vs. system flow. Identify where paper or scanner steps create silent reconciliation lag.

  2. Week 02 EDI + channels

    Retailer + 3PL matrix.

Per-retailer ASN, label, and chargeback rules documented. 3PL integration patterns. Item master and pricing waterfall audit across DTC, B2B, retail, Amazon.

  3. Week 03 Output

    Written assessment.

Native NetSuite vs. dedicated WMS recommendation, EDI partner choice, 3PL integration plan, item master rationalization scope, range estimate, timeline.

FAQ

Distribution-specific questions.

01 How does NetSuite WMS compare to a dedicated WMS like Manhattan or HighJump?
NetSuite WMS is a strong fit for mid-market distributors with one to three DCs and predictable wave/zone picking. Above that complexity — bulk + cross-dock + voice picking + advanced slotting — a dedicated WMS still wins. Trevera will tell you which side of that line you are on, and integrate the dedicated WMS to NetSuite when that is the right call.
02 Can NetSuite handle EDI for Tier-1 retail compliance?
Yes, via SPS Commerce, TrueCommerce, or custom SuiteScript. We have shipped EDI for Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, and others — including ASN, 856, 850, 810, and chargeback handling. The honest answer: SPS handles 80%+ of mid-market needs at lower implementation cost.
03 What about RF-Smart vs. native NetSuite mobile?
RF-Smart still leads on barcode-driven warehouse operations. Native NetSuite mobile has closed gaps but is not yet at parity for full WMS workflows. We implement both depending on operational complexity.
04 How does SuiteCommerce B2B compare to dedicated B2B platforms?
SuiteCommerce B2B's advantage is native NetSuite — pricing, inventory, contracts, customer-specific catalogs all live in one place. Its disadvantage is front-end flexibility versus headless options. We will recommend headless (Next.js + NetSuite APIs) when your front-end ambition exceeds what SuiteCommerce ships.
05 How are 3PL integrations typically structured?
Standard pattern: NetSuite is the system of record for inventory, the 3PL acknowledges receipts and ships against orders sent from NetSuite, and reconciliation runs daily. We've integrated to ShipBob, ShipMonk, Saddle Creek, and dozens of regional 3PLs.
06 How long does a 2-DC distributor implementation take?
Plan on 5–8 months for a $50M–$200M two-DC distributor with EDI to one or two retailers. Variables that move timeline: number of integrations (EDI, 3PL, eCommerce), data migration scope, and how clean your current item master is.
